The Royal Hospital Chelsea dates back to the 17th century as a purpose-built safe haven for elderly veterans, the famous Chelsea Pensioners. Commissioned by King Charles II, this incredible building has been showing its age over recent decades and has recently undergone a programme of major refurbishment and modernisation.
As part of the refurbishment process, Storm Windows was called in to help improve the thermal efficiency of resident bedrooms on the West Wing. By fitting bespoke secondary glazing in sympathy with the historic fabric of the building we were able to enhance resident comfort and reduce energy bills.
We were thrilled to be asked to return to the Royal Hospital to install more bespoke secondary glazing. This time, in the shop, Sloane Stable Yard, and post office. The Grade II listed Stable Yard is the new starting point for visitors to the hospital site. It was designed and built by Sir John Soane, whose legacy includes the Bank of England and Dulwich Picture Gallery, between 1814 and 1817. The stable block provided stalls for 25 working horses, space for nine carriages, and two flats for stable boys and coachmen.
This time round we’ll be fitting 31 windows. These will be a mixture of slimlines, shaped slimlines, and horizontal sliding units. After the success of our initial work with the hospital, we were included as part of the complete tender package offered by traditional building contractor, Messenger BCR.
The work begins in October and we can’t wait to get back on site.
