The beautiful city of Bath has a long history. Taking its name from the Roman-built baths, it was founded in c. 60 AD by the Mediterranean invaders, when it became ‘Aquae Sulis’ or ‘the waters of Sul’. Nestling in the valley of the River Avon, the city is today as famous for its stunning Georgian architecture as it is for its historic baths.
The city was awarded World Heritage site status in 1987, and today attracts nearly 4 million visitors every year. Over a million of those visitors stay within the city. Over recent years, this popularity has increased even further with the global success of Netflix period drama, Bridgerton.
The need to accommodate such large numbers of visitors means there are plenty of hotels and visitor accommodation across the city. Many of these are located in buildings of historic importance. We have been working with developers and hotel owners in the city to ensure that historic buildings provide suitable amenities for travellers while ensuring that the historic character of the city is preserved.
The Abbey Hotel, Bath
The Abbey Hotel in North Parade is one such building. With its location just a short walk from the Roman Baths and the spectacular Pulteney Bridge, it’s a popular berth for international visitors. The hotel has recently been undergoing a modernisation programme that provides better amenities for visitors while protecting the building’s historic fabric.
Storm Windows were a natural choice for the developers when it came to supplying and fitting approximately 50 secondary glazing units. These were fitted into rooms throughout the hotel and featured lower vertical sliding sash units that work perfectly with the hotel’s original sash windows. This type of glazing allows the lower panel to be opened, facilitating easier cleaning and effective ventilation. The glazing units are magnetic meaning they can easily be removed as required.
The quality of our glazing means that it’s virtually invisible and blends in beautifully with the decor of the building, which makes it perfect for a Grade II listed building. We also had to work to a strict schedule, ensuring that the rooms were finished and ready for customers as quickly as possible.
Hotel Indigo Bath
We also recently worked with Emery Brothers, a Bath based family owned contractor with an established and trusted reputation in the city. They were carrying out work at Hotel Indigo, located in a Grade I listed Georgian building in the heart of Bath.
The hotel faces a busy street, and traffic noise could be an issue, and potentially distracting from the visitor experience. We were commissioned to install approximately 70 secondary glazing units into rooms throughout the hotel. Our units provide a sound reduction of 38-41 dBs, which makes a significant difference in a busy urban environment.
As with the Abbey Hotel installation, we fitted lower vertical sliding sash units that work perfectly with the hotel’s original sash windows. Simplified cleaning and maintenance make these a highly attractive option where aesthetic integrity needs to be combined with functionality, such as in hotels. Now both hotels can offer visitors enhanced sound and thermal insulation for a more comfortable, quieter, stay.
We’re experienced at working with hotels, which often repurpose iconic buildings such as those in Bath. As a trusted partner with leading heritage and conservation organisations such as English Heritage, National Trust, CADW, and the Crown Estate, hotel owners and developers often turn to Storm for our combination of technical know-how and flexibility when it comes to installation.
