Continuous professional development is a key element of working in the glazing industry and over the past 12 months our team of surveyors and installers have been going through the process of studying for a HND in Secondary Glazing.
This has involved a number of exams, course work and site assessments and we are delighted to report that our fantastic team of Oliver, Warwick, Andy and Mitchell have all passed with flying colours!
So, what does this mean?
All of our team already have CSCS cards (CSCS is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry. CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out).
As these cards expire, new legislation dictates that individuals involved in the glass and glazing industry need to possess a Q-Card and have relevant qualifications that prove their ability to do the job.
What is a Q card?
Q Cards replace CSCS cards for professional glaziers. In 2017, the GQA Q-card became a formal partner of CSCS (the Construction Skills Certification Scheme). This means GCA is now in charge of issuing cards for glass and glazing workers. The Q-Card is designed to show that the holder has knowledge and skills that meet national occupational standards. For clients this means that they can check the cards to ensure the person working on their glazing project is fully qualified to do so. The cards can be read by any barcode reader on any smartphone with an internet connection and those wishing to ensure cards are genuine before glazing work commences can also call the GQA office for verification.
Safety and competence
CSCS and GQA decided that the Q-Card was a more suitable fit for the glazing and fenestration industry some time ago. The Q-Card is now used to show that glaziers, fenestration surveyors, conservatory, curtain wall, windows and doors installers have the competence to carry out their duties safely and professionally.
The importance of qualifications
Qualifications are extremely important within the glazing industry. Those who wish to become professional glazers must undergo rigorous training in order to achieve their aims. Tradespeople working in glazing now need to undertake a course to provide their competence. The training we received was provided by GQA Qualifications and Total Support Training and though it’s been a hectic and challenging 12 months, it’s been worth every minute and we couldn’t be more pleased with the outstanding results that the team have achieved.
