There are few signs of the British public falling out of love with the classic period property. Study after study shows that Britons still prefer to purchase period properties over new builds.
Timeless character
One of the main reasons the homebuyers of Britain love period properties so much is their timeless character. Some new builds can start to appear dated very quickly, whereas period homes rarely seem to lose their charm, even when they do require maintenance work. One study, carried out by the Discount Flooring Depot, found that a massive 82% of people would rather purchase a period property than a new build, with many citing original features as the main reason for their preference.
Extra space and idyllic locations
Other great reasons for purchasing period properties include their often sought-after locations and the additional space they so frequently offer, inside and outside. Features popular with buyers include original windows, genuine wooden floorboards, cornicing and feature fireplaces. Sadly, the period property remains out of reach for many due to their substantial price tags.
Interestingly, the study also found that almost 9 out of every 10 millennials would prefer to buy a period home, with many making up for new builds’ lack of period features by adding features like cornicing and real wood flooring to their properties.
When maintenance work is needed
One of the things you may need to consider when buying a period property is the fact you might need to pay for substantial maintenance work to be carried out. When you purchase a new build, this is not a concern, and you’ll also be covered by a 10-year builders’ guarantee. If you are considering buying a period home, it is wise to seek out advice from a property expert who can provide in-depth information on resolving problems such as substandard ventilation, draught proofing and insulation. And of course, not forgetting that adding secondary glazing to a period property can make it more energy-efficient without the character of the property being compromised.

More about our secondary glazing
When we provide your secondary glazing solution, we create an internal window on the inside of your original building. This cannot be seen from the outside of the building so the historic integrity of your property is left untarnished.
We are able to offer solutions for a wide range of historic windows, including sash, casement and York sliders. We can also provide glazing in a ‘curved-in-plan’ condition. Our solutions are built around slimline magnetic systems and can reduce noise, eliminate draughts and enhance thermal efficiency.
